“Flatiron” Original Oil Painting by Gary Duncan or Clayboard 16″ x 20″.

Artist comments – about this painting.

This original oil painting was created in about the year 2000.  It’s one of those that, as an artist, you really like yourself, so you may keep it in your own private collection.  Although I have sold some prints of this one, I do still own the original and it is for sale on the website.

The background on this painting is:  I was invited to spend a week long Art Residency in an event called “The Fields Project” in Oregon, Illinois.  The theme of the event was “The relationship between Art & Agriculture”. It was a grand experience and the artists were treated like kings and queens for a week.  We were housed with sponsor farm families.  The family I stayed with went out of their way to. make me feel at home and the kitchen table was out of this world; some might fine food.

As artist our responsibility was to work with our art, on location, every day.  This area is located along the Rock River and there were a lot of beautiful scenes.  I drove my old ’68 International truck, towing a 5 x 10 cargo trailer with all my stuff.  So, I could pull into a location and begin painting right away.  It was a grand week and. the artist was treated extremely well.  One day we were taken out to the National John Deere Historic Site in Grand Detour, IL.  This is a really cool place full of some amazing historical value.  This is where John Deere lived and opened up a blacksmith shot after moving west from Vermont, as a young man.  This “Flatiron” image comes from a snapshot I took while there from inside the house he lived in.  I created the painting in my studio after I returned home.

During the painting process it gave me great peace….and, there was something about how the light and shadow played out on the curtains.  There was something about the colorful fabric that intrigued me…somewhere in my childhood or past I had seen that fabric.  Perhaps in my grandmother’s home. Anyway, I have enjoyed this painting on my wall for 20+ years now; maybe it’s time to give it a new home.
